The Problem

Books being constantly and unnecessarily banned is a rapidly growing problem in today's world. Books are often banned without proper understanding of the material in the books, and a lot of the positive value in books gets buried under these bans. Book bans restrict knowledge from being shared through literature and diminish works of art and effort authors put into books. This limits freedom of speech, and can cause many challenges such as authors self- censoring their own work. A list of additional challenges is shown below:

  • Censorship may prevent insights into controversial topics.

  • Students from marginalized communities may be targeted by politicians and others who are pushing the book ban agenda. This may stigmatize students within these communities and lead to them being ostracized from other students. As a result, this may lead to added mental health issues such as depression and anxiety.

  • Censorship may fuel curiosity and increase demand for the banned material. This may lead to underground circulation, making it more challenging to monitor and address potential concerns which are kept under wraps more intensely.

  • Censorship is very subjective, it almost always depends on the person and people who are in power of banning them, this may create multiple standards for bans, creating increased confusion.

  • If institutions responsible for education and cultural discourse begin to support censorship, trust in these institutions may decline as people might question their motive and credibility behind these decisions.

These are just a few examples of the many challenges that come as a side effect of book bans.

Two Degrees- Alan Gratz

This book was challenged because of its mentions of climate change and the element of fear in the story. If students aren't educated about these concepts, how are they to understand the consequences of climate change and how the planet may look in the future?

Harry Potter- J.K. Rowling

Harry Potter is a classic story- and it feels impossible for it to be banned. However, the mentions of magic and spells in the story have caused it to be banned for religious reasons.

Ruby Bridges

This book tells the inspirational story of Ruby Bridges and her role in fighting for civil rights. However, it has been challenged because it covers topics of history, social justice, and race. However, it is essential that students learn about these topics.
